Applied Music Placement Auditions
All new UND music majors are required to audition for applied lessons. For this audition,
please prepare the following material:
Instrumental Auditions: (Josephine Campbell Recital Hall)
- Solos -
- For instrumentalists: 2 contrasting solos (one technical, one lyrical) OR 1 solo with a contrasting etude OR 2 contrasting movements from the same solo, 5-6 minutes of music.
- For percussion: solos on 2 of the following: tympani, snare and mallets.
- For piano: the difficulty of the pieces must be equal to a Bach Two-Part Invention or to level 8 of the Royal Conservatory Series.
- Scales -
- For instrumentalists: chromatic scale, full length of the instrument; 2 major scales of the student's choice, at least 2 octaves in length.
- For piano: one major and one minor, hands together, two octaves. Students will be allowed to play one scale of their choice. Faculty will choose the other.
- Sight Reading - To be chosen by the instructor. For percussion: students may choose to sight read on snare, tympani or mallets.
Vocal Auditions: (HFAC 152)
- Solos - One piece, from memory, any language.
- Scales - One major scale (any key) and one harmonic minor scale (any key).
- Sight Reading - To be chosen by the instructor.
- Tonal Memory - You will be asked to reproduce short melodic phrases.
