Curriculum

With the diversity of music programs and the educational directions they take, required curricula vary from program to program. All programs, however, focus around a central "core" of courses which are designed to give the student a broad background in his or her chosen area of specialization. These "core" courses include:
  • Harmony & Music Theory I, II, III, IV
  • Aural Skills I, II, HI, IV
  • Music History Survey I, II, III
  • Popular and Classical Musics of the World
Music study begins during the freshman year with individual lessons in the chosen major instrument or voice, participation (for credit) in performing organizations, and studies in theory, ear training and sight singing, as well as musical style and listening skills.

Regardless of the degree program selected, all music majors are evaluated regularly and must pass proficiency tests in functional piano skills prior to graduation and before student teaching in music.

All students enrolled in the Bachelor of Music programs also are expected to participate in a major musical ensemble each semester at UND.

The following undergraduate degrees are offered at UND:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Music
  • Bachelor of Music in Music Education
  • Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy
  • Bachelor of Music in Performance

The following graduate degrees are offered at UND:

  • Master of Music in Choral Conducting
