10/15/2008 -- UND School of Engineering and Mines Celebrates Outstanding Alumnus Larry Jodsaas Friday


The University of North Dakota School of Engineering and Mines will honor outstanding University alumni Friday, including school benefactor Larry Jodsaas.

Below is a list of events gong on at the University of North Dakota School of Engineer and Mines Friday in celebration of  Homecoming:

At 10 a.m. Sherri Bonacci McDaniel, bachelor's of Science in electrical engineering '89; Class of 2008 School of Engineering and Mines Alumni Academy inductee, will be speaking in Salah Faruque' class,  Electrical Engineering 321- Electronics I,  Upson II 261

There will be a presentation by UND alumnus and benefactor Larry Jodsaas titled “Giving Back"  is slated for 11 a.m., at the Jodsaas Center, on the second floor of Harrington Hall.  Jodsaas is a 2008 Sioux Awards Recipient. This event is open to the public.
 
Jodsaas earned an electrical engineering degree in 1962. Following graduation he secured a position with Control Data.  There, he held several different roles including president for Control Data’s systems business and vice president of operations for the peripheral products portion of the company. In 1990 Jodsaas bought VTC, Inc., a semiconductor manufacturing business. He sold the brand engineering and sales and marketing portions of VTC in 2000, but kept the manufacturing portion and through it he started PolarFab - the only privately held semiconductor foundry in the United States. Jodsaas, who retired in 2005, recently funded the Jodsaas Center within UND’s School of Engineering and Mines. Jodsaas resides in St. Paul.

A dedication ceremony of the Jodsaas Center for Engineering Leadership and Entrepreneurship will take place at 2:30 p.m.

The Jodsaas Center for Engineering Leadership and Entrepreneurship was made possible by a generous gift from UND School of Engineering and Mines Alum, Larry Jodsaas, Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, 1962.  The purpose of the Jodsaas Center is to develop interdisciplinary curriculum, programming, and outreach opportunities for faculty and students related to leadership and entrepreneurship. One of the first goals is the creation of a minor in Engineering Entrepreneurship, which will provide opportunities for students to experience the challenges of going beyond design and manufacturing into the realm of commercialization, marketing, and sales.


At 3 p.m.,  SEM Alumni Academy Induction Ceremony.  New inductees are: Sherri Bonacci McDaniel, BSEE, 1989; John Mark Erickson, MSGE, 1968, PhD, 1971; Norman Hoffman, BSChE, 1959; Walter I. Swinger, BSGIE, 1953  
The ceremony will be held on the second floor of the Jodsaas Center, 100 Harrington Hall

A reception will follow in honor of the 2008 Academy Members and celebrating the dedication of the Jodsaas Center for Engineering Leadership and Entrepreneurship
