Therese Costes directs the Music Therapy Program at the University of North Dakota, an undergraduate program that she also designed. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Performance from California State University at Sacramento, a Master of Arts degree in Music Therapy from Texas Woman’s University, and a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Manitoba. She has also completed BMGIM Level I, Neurologic Music Therapy training and Clinical Fieldwork training for NICU-MT certification.
Prior to her UND appointment, Ms. Costes maintained a private practice in Music Therapy in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she worked with children and adults from a variety of populations, and was in demand as a consultant and workshop presenter.
For many years Ms. Costes was active as a soloist and chamber musician, specializing in contemporary music performance. As a founding artistic co-director of GroundSwell, Winnipeg’s new music series, she curated and presented new music concerts and engaged in integrated media collaborations with poets, composers, visual artists and writers. She has presented concerts in Canada, the U.S., Europe and Asia. Noteworthy performances include the New York premiere of Récitations for voice and four dancers, presented at Joyce Soho Theatre, and the European premiere in Amsterdam, Netherlands of Sweat and Mirror Notwithstanding, written for Ms. Costes and the Mondriaan String Kwartet.
Ms. Costes is a member of the American Music Therapy Association, and is the Midwest representative for the Special Target Populations Committee. She has given papers and workshops at conferences in Canada, and the U.S. In 2005 Ms. Costes was awarded a Faculty Seed Grant for the project Developing a Model for Music Therapy in the Public School System, which lead to the creation of the first music therapy position in Grand Forks.
Ms. Costes will be on developmental leave during the 2009-2010 school year.
